The year is 1933 and Virginia Hill is living, in Chicago, in a brothel, after divorcing her abusive husband and working in a diner that is frequented by mobsters. She made a new friend in Madeline, who started working for the mob and has vanished in New York. Virginia is determined to find her and aligns with Joey Ep, who is high up in the Chicago mob and he gives her a chance to work her way up and get to New York, in an attempt to find her friend. She also aligns with Bugsy Siegel, another notorious mobster. We follow along on Virginia’s journey through New York, Mexico and Los Angeles. She has to deal with strong men, drugs, smuggling and murders. Through it all she holds her own and becomes a named person in the world of male mobsters. This is a GREAT historical fiction novel. I had never heard of Virginia Hill and her story is intense and incredible. Every time I read a novel like this I learn something new. This is one of the best books of the year.
