Lenny Marks, is 37, a school teacher and mostly a shut-in. She has the same routine every week, and has no friends, except Ned who is kind of a friend, who manages the supermarket she goes to. There’s also the elderly woman, Maureen, her neighbor, who one day she finds unconscious. Lenny then starts to have flashbacks of her tortured childhood, things she has blocked out for years come flooding back and she’s shocked at what she remembers. She also gets a letter and phone calls that her former stepdad, Fergus, is being released from prison, and when he gets out, a shocking reveal and situation takes place. All through this Lenny starts to recover from everything and may even find love. This is the debut novel from author Mayne and it’s a great one. It’s a rich, well-written character-driven novel, with some well placed twists. If her future books are like this, she will be a force in the writing industry.
