In 1938 Helaine Well, who is 18, Jewish and lives in Paris, and has lived a sheltered live due to a medical condition when she was younger, meets a musicain and runs away with him to be married. When Germany invades, she’s taken prisoner and forced to work in Levitan, a German work camp, in a department store, selling things stolen from the Jews. Her husband is missing somewhere in Germany. In 1953, Louise Burns finds a half necklace in the thrift store she works in, (it’s a two part necklace), and knows she has seen it before, when she was in Germany during the war, working for the Red Cross. She decides to go to Paris and try to figure out how the necklace was found and who might have the other half. She meets up with her former Red Cross boss Ian, and together they start investigating. She finds clues and leads and then discovers a shocking reveal and it takes her to a mysterious house and the answers she’s looking for. This is another great WWII novel by author Jenoff, who excels at these novels. This is one you do not want to miss.
