The body of Johnny Chambliss…aka Johnny Careless to his friends, has been found in the water of Bayless, on Long Island’s North Shore. He was born a trust-fund baby, had lots of personality, everyone loved him, and he was able to pretty much get away with whatever he wanted. His best friend is Jeep, who is now the police chief in town. He is not on the case, but is looking into it to find out what exactly happened to his friend. He’s also trying to find a gang of car robbers of expensive vehicles in town. We learn about his friendship with Johnny via flashback chapters and how it relates to the events of today, with these two different cases going on. This is an excellent, character-driven debut novel, by one of the writers and now showrunner of the CBS show Blue Bloods. You really get engaged in the story of Jeep and Johnny, and how the past and the present collide. This is one of those novels you don’t want to put down.
