Author Tasha Alexander is back with book number 14 in her Lady Emily series and my first time reading one. I love it. Lady Emily and her husband Colin are awesome character, the story well-written and the setting perfect.
It’s 1902 and Lady Emily and Colin are in Pompeii on an archaeological dig. As they check the ruins they find a body among the bodies that have been buried since the eruption in Vesuvius centuries ago. They call the police and find out the man is a reporter for the Times out of New York. No one knows how he got there. He is known because he was here before to do a story. The police have no leads and don’t think they will. Emily decides the will investigate it on her own along with Colin.
On top of that Colin is in for a shock when a woman named Kat von Lange shows up and claims to be his daughter from a relationship many years ago. Her mother died and left letters to be given at a certain time after her death and now she’s here to meet her father and wants to help out. She’s a stubborn one and immediately causes problems.
Emily is not deterred in her quest to find the killer. Another person is killed, Colin is injured and Emily gets a cryptic warning but will not be deterred in her efforts to find the killer.
There’s also another story from AD 79 involving a slave girlv Quinta Flavia Kassandra who writes poetry and live in Pompeii and how she ties into the story. The setting is perfect in this novel and you almost feel like you are there in both time periods.
After one book I am hooked on these characters and look forward to more novels from Tasha featuring Emily. You can pick up In The Shadow Of Vesuvius in stores on Tuesday, January 7th from Minotaur Books.
