Book Review: ‘I Wish We Weren’t Related: A Novel’ By Radhika Sanghani

Reeva has won a big court case and should be on top of the world. She’s a very good divorce attorney, has a cool new boyfriend named Nick, a cat that hates her, and could even be up for a partnership. Then her mother, who is a famous Bollywood actress/singer, calls to tell her that her father has died. This isn’t new news as he died when she was five, turns out he didn’t and has been alive all this time, and has really died this time. She and her two estranged sisters must attend the 13-day morning period, do to his will, in order for the three of them to inherit his estate. She doesn’t want to go, but goes anyway, has to confront her sisters over the past, deal with her family she never knew, find out the truth about what really happened to her father, confront her loss of hair, and her relationship with Nick. As she puts the pieces together, she has a shocking reveal, the support of her sisters, and just maybe for the first time in her life find piece. A well-written, character driven novel, steeped in Indian culture, with some LOL moments. At its core, it’s about family, and putting the past behind you.
