Simone Hartwell is black and married to Alex, who is white, and they live in well off area in Wisconsin, and she always feels that people look at her because of being with a white man. When Alex takes over the family grocery store chain, and he is excited to be the new CEO. What he isn’t happy about is that his grandfather, Poppy, had to step down and has dementia. His first day on the job, he finds out the company is in bad financial shape, and Alex had just put a big deposit on an expensive house. Simone meets up with her ex-boyfriend, Kwame, who is an award-winning podcaster, and learns he is working on a story about a missing black student, Wade Freeman, at the school that Poppy and Alex went to. It was during the time Poppy was there, and he learns they were on the same debate team. Simone begins investigating the death and learns a shocking secret. Meanwhile, Alex is drinking a lot, and neither he nor Simone is talking, and it soon affects their marriage. This is an intense, character-driven novel about communication, secrets, and how sometimes they can destroy a couple. This one is not to be missed.
