The year is 2015 and Mary Newcombe is at her mother’s house on Cape Cod. On there’s a fire at the medical building where her lat father used to work. A nurse is trapped and burned and in the hospital. Mary was at home that night or was she? A number of people claim to have seen her near the fire. Mary is also worried about her son Danny, who was hanigng around with her cousin Jimmy, who was into bad things. On top of that, Mary has a dysfunctional relationship with her mother and yearns to know who her real mother is, she’s adopted. The FBI shows up in town, people are dying, more fires are taking place and Mary seems to be in the middle of all of this. This is a well-written character-driven novel, set in a small town, where everyone knows everyone’s secrets.
