The first novel in a new series by Cynthia Kuhn, is a delighful small-town mystery, with quirky characters and a solid mystery to read along with. Emma Starrs and her sister Lucy now run the family bookstore Starlit Bookshop, in a small Colorado town. The business is not doing well and they may go under unless things pick up quickly. In walks Tabitha Baxter, a former rival in high school and the queen social bee in the town. She’s having a murder-mystery dinner party and needs someone to run it. Emma agrees to do it for a nice payday. Things are going good until Tabitha’s husband Tip is found dead, smothered by a pillow. Tabitha accuses Emma and her Aunt Nora (who works with Tip at the local college) of killing him. Tabitha starts to make life miserable for Emma and the store. And then Emma finds two more bodies next door to the bookshop, at the new music venue opening from one of Tabitha’s ex-husbands. Emma decides to start investigating and on Halloween night, during a big book-signing/costume event, she gets in over her head and the killer aims for her to silence her up.
