Rebecca Blume is an editor at Avenue Publishing and has been for five years. Ben Heath is a new editor at the parent company of Avenue, and the two of them are forced to share a desk due the new open concept program the company has instituted. They work different days in the office and have a post-it note little battle going on over a cactus on the desk, and keeping it clean. When a famous author named Edward ‘the Lion’ Adams passes away, a scramble is on to get the rights to his works. Rebecca is asked to meet with his widow, Rose, and she cannot figure out why she has been asked. Ben is friends with the son, Atticus, of Edward and hopes to get an in as well. It turns out Rebecca’s mother Joan, and Rose knew each other early in their careers and became best friends, until something happened to end the friendship, which we learn about via flashback chapters. The battle is on between Rebecca and Ben for the rights, and they soon find themselves falling for each other. This is a fun debut novel with a lot of insight into the publishing world. The witty banter between Rebecca and Ben is fun, and some of the supporting characters are a hoot. A good labor day weekend read.
