It’s the height of the depression in a small Minnesota town and for Sam and Sarah, it’s the beginning of a love story. Both are 18 and graduating from high school. They are in love and Sam wants to get married. Sarah is off to college on a scholarship and Sam wants to go to college as well but he and his family are broke. He does odd jobs in town to help his family out. He decides to join the National Guard and commits to three years. That turns into a longer time after the US is forced into the war after the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor. Sam is sent overseas and soon his platoon is captured and made into POWs. Sarah joins the war effort as well as a code-breaker and soon gets stationed in Hawaii, where she cracks a code that can have life-altering implications for Sam. We follow along with both of their stories and hope that Sam can survive long enough to get back to Sarah. This book is GREAT! It’s a WWII story, a love story and an incredibly well-written novel. This is by far one of the best books of the year!
