It’s been six years since author Julia Spencer-Fleming has written a Clare Ferguson/Russ Van Alstyne novel and now she’s back and in a big way. Her new novel features these great characters and compelling, thrilling story that spans many years and three murders. It also furthers the story of Clare and Russ and the small town they work and live in. My first time reading one of her novels and I am hooked.
1952-A woman is found dead on the road and it looks like it might be murder but no concrete evidence. Officer Jack Liddell is one of the offices investigating.
1972-Another woman is murdered in a similar way to the murder in 1952. Police Chief Jack Liddell is on the case and this time Russ Van Alstyne is a suspect. Fresh back from Vietnam and a mess, he has found the body but claims he didn’t kill her.
Present Day-Another woman is found murdered in the same vain as the other two women. This time Police Chief Russ Van Alstyne is on the case.
The small town of Millers Kill is on the verge of change. A motion has been made to do away with the local police force to save money and leave things in the hands of the state police. Russ and his officers and others in town are fighting this. It will be on the ballot in November. Meanwhile this murder is the top priority for Russ. He’s doing everything he can to solve it. It means revisiting the two previous murders for anything that might help solve it.
He ends up getting help from the former police chief and from his wife Reverend Clare, who is adjusting to life as a new mother and trying to keep busy with her work. When testing comes back on the murdered woman they catch a break and Russ soon figures out everything. There’s also a shocking resolve to what will happen to the Police force.
Hopefully it will not be another six years before there’s another novel with these awesome characters. You can pick up Hid From Our Eyes in stores on Tuesday, April 7th from Minotaur Books.
