Book Review: ‘Heat 2: A Novel’ By Michael Mann And Meg Gardiner

I never saw the movie Heat with Pacino and DeNiro and I googled it and saw great reviews. I talked to a friend who said it was great. So going into this book I was on my own as far as the story goes. I was able to understand everything right from the beginning and loved this book. It’s all action from the start and covers different time periods featuring the core characters. It’s what Michael Mann is known for and add in the awesome Meg Gardiner and it’s a great end of summer novel to read. The story starts the very next day after Heat ends. LAPD Detective Hanna and the department just had a shootout with the bad guys and Chris Shieherlis has managed to escape but is wounded. He’s hiding out and a plan is underway for him to escape the country and he ends up in South America working a crime family (he had to leave his wife and son behind). Flash to the past and we follow Chris and his gang on a caper and Hanna as he chases him. Hanna is also determined to find Wardell, who ten years earlier went to ground and is now using a different name and operating in Los Angeles. It all leads to one climatic ending where the three of them intersect and someone won’t survive. If you didn’t see the movie, don’t worry about it. It’s very easy to read this book!
