The year is 1990, in Glensted, England and Alex Salter is turning 50, and a big party is planned for him. His three sons, and daughter are there, but his wife Charlotte never shows up. Her coat is found in the water, and it is presumed she’s dead. Then on Christmas day, neighbor Duncan Ackerly’s body is found in the water by his son Morgan, and Etty, Charlotte’s daughter. It is presumed that Duncan and Charlotte were having an affair, and he killed her, and then himself. Now thirty years later Morgan and his brother Greg are back in town, and doing a podcast, to talk about what happened all those years ago, the case with police never amounted to anything, and try and find answers. They learn little things, and when a woman’s house is burned down, and she dies, it may be tied in to what happened all those years ago, and a new detective is brought in to look at everything, and soon figures out shocking details about what really happened back then. Author Nicci French, a husband and wife writing team (and one of my favorite authors), never disappoint, and this one is another great psychological thriller. It hooks you from the beginning, and keeps you engaged through all the twists.
