Jessie Redmon Fauset was a black teacher in Washington D.C. who in 1919 moved to Harlem with her mother and became the first black woman to be named the editor of The Crisis, a magazine for black people. She is determined to prove herself to everyone, even though she has a secret, she’s been having an affair with W.E.B. Du Bois, the founder of the magazine and who is also married and older than she is. She discovers new black talent and the magazine is doing great. When Jessie gets her first novel published, it brings her notoriety and fame, and she’s considered one of the founders of the Harlem Renaissance, but it also may come with a cost. This is her story and it’s quite the historical fiction novel. I love this genre and learn something new every time I read one of these books. I had no idea about Jessie and author Murray has done a great job writing about her life. Fans of these kind of novels will love this one.
