Ida and Jean met in the ’50s when they were both married and had children. They fell in love right away and started having an affair until one of their husbands caught them. Their husbands were both abusive, and the two women ended up killing them and burying the bodies in the back yard. It’s now the ’90s in Rockaway, New York, and the two women have lived together and been happy for over fifty years, although they are still in the closet. When the HOA tells them the electric company is putting new wires in, and their backyard, where the bodies are buried, and they have a lovely garden, will be torn up, the two women panic. When the electric company shows up, they try to bribe the man without any luck and end up killing him. They grab their stuff their cat and hit the road hoping to escape to Canada. They figure as long as they’re together everything will be okay. We follow them along on their road trip, and watch as one of them makes the ultimate sacrifice for the other. This novel is one of the best books of the year. Think the Golden Girls meets Thelma & Louise. The love story between the two women is one of the best of the year. The story is well-written, and you get emotionally invested in this couple and root for them to be able to stay together. This book is not to be missed.
