The year is 1992 and Det. Inspector Sean Duffy is working part-time for the RUL in Belfast in order to get his pension and retirement, which he will be eligilbe for in a couple of years. He moved his family to Scotland and commutes six days a month. Times are tough in Ireland with the country at was with itself. As Duffy is ready to go home, a murder has taken place and he is asked to investigate it. The man was killed in what looks like a carjacking, but Duffy thinks it’s more than that and when he starts asking too many questions, and figures out the IRA is involved, he finds his life in danger. When he is relieved of the case, he gets new information, and he follows it up, which takes him to the United States and a shocking reveal as to what has been going on. This is the eighth novel in this series and Sean Duffy is a great character. The political stuff is worked into the story in a compelling way and there’s lots of fun pop-culture references from that time period. Author McKinty has written another intense novel. If you get a chance pick up The Island and The Chain, two great novels he wrote a few years ago.
