The setting of Pine Bluff, Oregon, is the setting for the debut novel. Dawna Carpenter, a widow, who talks to her dead husband, and also sees her late cat, is now in charge of the family hardware store. When she goes to the bathroom, she finds the dead body of Warren Highcastle, who is in town to buy the run-down opera house, and turn it into apartments. The police start their investigation, and someone is soon arrested, a man who Dawna knows didn’t do it. Soon another murder victim is found, her employee Steve. Gemma, along with her daughter April, start their own investigation, and soon are getting threatening notes to back off, and they soon find their lives in jeopardy. This is a fun start to this new series. These small-town mysteries are fun to read, and author Carpenter sets this up nicely for future novels in the series.
