Book Review: ‘Halcyon Years: A Novel’ By Alastair Reynolds

The ship Halcyon is the setting for this futuristic story. It is a huge ship with cities and towns, headed for a planet to unload those humans who want to go. Yuri Gagarin, who is Russian and a former cosmonaut, has been awakened up from his sleep aboard the ship. He’s is a private investigator, and is hired by a woman named Ruby Blue, who wants him to look into the deaths of two people, who were part of two wealthy families. When Yuri starts investigating, he talks to one of their doctors, who moments later is killed. It is deemed that Yuri will need help on this case, and is given a robot assistant, whom he names Sputnik, and soon figures out not everything aboard this ship is on the up and up. This is an excellent, fun novel, with a great new character in Yuri, and his cohort Sputnik. I can only hope we can get more adventures with these characters. This is one not to be missed.
