Present-day Walt Longmire, the sheriff of Absaroka County, is under review for the events of the last book, where he killed a man in self-defense. An official inquiry is underway before a judge, and he has to testify at the hearing. He’s also telling the story of 1964 and what happened to him and his best friend Henry, as they were driving to the East Coast from California, after signing up for the Vietnam War (they would have been drafted and decided to enlist before that happened). They ended up in a small Arizona town, off the beaten path, and got into a world of trouble there. The man that runs the town doesn’t like strangers, Walt and Henry are asking too many questions about what has happened in this town, a hit squad is after them because they save a crew shipwrecked in the California ocean before they left, with a boat full of drugs. The novel goes back and forth between now and then, and it’s another thrilling novel in the series. I really like these Longmire books and author Craig Johnson never disappoints. Fans of the series will be thrilled with this one.
