Author J.A. Jance is back with her 22nd novel featuring the very popular Joanna Brady character. This time around Joanna’s life is at a crossroads. She is up for election for her Sheriff position against a very tough candidate and expecting her baby in three weeks. She wins by a small margin and during the results she goes into labor. She delivers the baby and is on maternity leave. But this being Joanna will she really take all the time she is allowed? There are bets going on to see how long she will stay out.
Meanwhile her husband Butch has his new novel published and has to go on the road for a couple of weeks to promote it. Things at the station seem to be okay until a 17 year old teenager comes into the station with a skull he found up in the remote mountains. When they go to investigate they find other bodies as well. Now there is a serial killer on the loose. Joanna is kept informed of everything while she takes care of her family. She’s also ready to start reading her late father’s journals and gets a sense of who he was.
The serial killer has been keeping woman chained in his basement and using them for his perverted sexual pleasures and then killing and dumping the bodies. Until one day he makes a fatal mistake and one of his victims is able to escape and then the hunt is on to capture him. Joanna can’t stay away and she ends up back to work making a few people a little richer!
Joanna Brady much like author J.A, Jance’s other character Ali Reynolds (another favorite series of mine by her) is a strong female who knows what she’s doing. She is able to balance her career and her family with a strong support system. Fans of the long running series will enjoy this newest installment. If you’re new to the series jump on in. Enough backstory is provided so you know who is who and what’s going on.
You can pick up Field Of Bones in stores on Tuesday, September 4th from Morrow.
