Eddie Winston is 90 years old, has a pet guinea pig and works at a thrift store in Birmingham, England. He’s living his best life and can often tell what people are feeling by the things they donate to the store. Bella is 24 and lost her boyfriend, Jake, a year ago and brings in his stuff to donate. They end up becoming friends and he helps console her, as she is still grieving him. When she learns he has never had a kiss in his life, she’s determined to get him his first one and to help him find love and signs him up on dating apps. We soon learn he once had a woman, Birdie, who he met at the university he worked at, and they fell for each other, but she was married and nothing came of it until she moved away one day. As he searches for love, his past comes back to today and he may have that kiss after all. This is a great, heart-warming novel, that you become emotionally invested in and it’s a true joy of a book to read. A great way to end this year in novels.
