Andy Carpenter is a successful lawyer, married to Laurie and has a teenage son, along with his dogs, tries to live a quiet life, he likes to say he is retired but always seems to have a new case. Now in this new prequel novel, we go back to the beginning of him being a defense lawyer. Once upon a time, Andy was a prosecuting lawyer who decided he wanted to be a defense lawyer. He was married to Nicole, I didn’t know he had a previous wife, has opened his own firm, has adopted Daisy the golden retriever and gotten his first criminal murder case. Frank Tierney had been arrested for the murder of his boss and two of his employees. Andy takes the case, hires Laurie (his future wife) and has Sam as well working his computer skills. His life is threatened and we get our first taste of Marcus as well. Andy has a tough job trying to prove Frank’s innocence during the trial. This is an excellent look at the beginnings of Andy for longtime readers of the series and a good intro as well for any new reader. This is book number 31 and I have learned a lot about Andy that I never knew.
