Maple Bishop lives in Vermont and is now a widow, losing her doctor husband Bill in WWII. When meeting with the lawyers, she gets a check for $12.67, that’s all that is left in his estate. Maple is broke, can’t find a job using her law degree, and isn’t sure what she will do. Maple has one talent building dollhouses and local hardware store owner Ben Crenshaw offers her space in his store to make and sell them. Her first customer is Angela Wallace, married to Elijah, a local farmer, and not a nice man. When she goes to deliver it, she finds him dead by hanging in his barn. The police think it was just an accident, and Maple teams up with rookie cop, Kenny, to investigate the death. The only way she knows how is to recreate it, like a dollhouse. Soon they discover this small town is full of secrets, and if they keep looking into it, things might not turn out well for her. This is the debut novel for author Tietjen, and it’s a fun one. I am a fan of small-town mysteries, and this one hits all the right notes. Hopefully, Maple and Kenny will be back for more adventures. You can pick up the book in stores on Tuesday, April 9th from Crooked Lane.
