Pleasant View, Utah is the setting for the second Abish ‘Abbie’ Taylor mystery. She is a detective in town and she has also left the church of Later Day Saints (LDS). Things are quiet until she gets a call about a car accident. It is believed to be a drunk driver at first. When they see the victim they know it can’t be a drunk driver. A prominent member of the church was behind the road and is now dead. The man is also an old friend of Abbie and her family. She doesn’t believe for a minute it was an accident. She finds a hiker who witnessed the accident and said there was another car and a man that looked down at the car.
She starts investigating and finds clues that it has to do with the church. She ends up going to Mexico and to a LDS retreat and finds more incriminating information and also is spotted by an old nemesis from the church. The more she digs, the more the church gets mad and starts to make her life miserable. They get her taken off the case and threaten her father and he could lose his job at BYU and be kicked out of the church.
But Abbie is not to be deterred and soon gets the upper hand but finds her life in danger. She must think quickly to get out of trouble and expose the killer.
This is the second book in the series. It’s an interesting look at the LSD religion and also has a great character in Abbie. She fights for what she wants and risks her life in the process. The story has a few twists and turns and is a solid thriller.
