Andy Carpenter hasn’t had a client in months, and that’s just fine with him, until he gets a call from an old friend, Lou Campanelli, who runs One Day At A Time, a rehab center. Jason Maddox, one of the homeless vets, who lives at the center, has been arrested for the murder of billionaire Paul Vincent in the alley behind the center. The two were friends and both dog lovers, who planned to open a series of dog shelters across the country. Jason made the mistake of taking the knife out of the back of Paul, had blood on him, and Paul’s wallet was found in his coat. The prosecution thinks it’s a slam dunk. Andy and his team have a lot of work in front of them to prove Jason innocent. There are a number of potential suspects, including gangsters, one whom wants Andy dead. As more dead bodies turn up, Andy must dig down and present his case to the best of his abilities. Also, Andy’s personal life is getting complicated as his son, Ricky, is now 16 and has a girlfriend. This is the 33rd novel in the series, and it’s another good one. All the great supporting characters are here, including my favorite character, bad-ass Marcus. The trial scenes are once again top-notch, and longtime fans will enjoy this one.
