There’s a famous song called My Way sung by Frank Sinatra with lyrics by Paul Anka. One of the lines is ‘Regrets I’ve Had A Few’ and for NY Senator Cleo McDougal she has 233 regrets at this point in her life. She’s been writing them down since she was a kid and her dad told her he did that. She lost her parents in an accident years later and was raised by her Grandmother.
Today she lives in D.C. and serves in the Senate. She’s 38 years old with a 14 year old teenage son, who acts like a 14 year old. She’s never been married and doesn’t really date. Her job and son are her live. And she’s popular and may run for the Presidency. And know her past comes back to haunt her. Her former best friend in high school has written a scathing op-ed on her accusing her of a lot of bad things. Cleo is outraged with it especially when some of the facts are wrong.
Her chief of staff comes up with a plan. She hears about Cleo’s regret lists and decides to turn it into a positive. She wants to put Cleo on a regrets tour and film it all to get the public on her side. It means confronting her past and people and things she regrets and it will shape the future of her political career.
I really enjoyed this book. We all have regrets and to face them is a brave thing to do. It touches on the #metoo movement as well as making one’s self look deep inside of themselves and to better who they are. And the characters are strong and fun to read.
You can pick up Cleo McDougal Regrets Nothing in stores on Saturday, August 1st.
