Book Review: ‘City Of Broken Magic’ Is Great Magical Debut From Author Mirah Bolender

In a time where magic and amulets are used to protect life, it is up to a group known as the sweepers to save cities and people’s lives. Over 500 years ago magi created a weapon of creatures that feast on broken amulets and magic and infest when they come across it. They can devour anyone in their paths.

The sweepers, mostly non-magical, are called when an infestation is found and they have to go and destroy them. Led by Clae and his apprentice Laura they are constantly busy with calls. It’s not an easy job to find and end these infestations. They could easily lose their lives while doing this (and some sweepers have died). They have to use something called Gin to kill these creatures. And when an infestation breaks out that has to evacuate the whole city, it’s up to the sweepers to find and destroy before major lives are lost (and there are losses).

A great magical debut filled with great, interesting characters, magic and a story that will have you invested in the outcome of the destroying the creatures and seeing if the sweepers can survive each job. It’s a story you won’t want to put down and the start of a great new series (I believe it will be a series).

You can pick up the debut novel in stores from Mirah Bolender on Tuesday, November 20th, from Tor.
