I’ve never read one of Laurie R. King’s Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes novels and I wish I had. This book was GREAT! It’s book number 18 and I will be reading them from now on (as long as she keeps writing them). It has everything you want in a book. A good mystery, fun characters and a story you don’t want to put down.
Set in 1925 Sherlock and his young wife Mary are headed to Transylvania, to Bran Castle (rumored to be Dracula’s castle), at the request of Queen Marie of Roumania. She’s requesting their help with her 16 year old-daughter, as she’s gotten a letter threatening her life. While they await the Queen they hear rumors of Vampires, Ghosts and othe mysterious creatures lurking about. And a few women have been found with puncture wounds on their bodies. They start investigating and learn that indeed weird things are happening. And then a young servant girl goes missing and they’re on a search to find her. It puts Mary’s life in danger on a few occasions but Sherlock will not be deterred and soon cracks the case but will need to use his wits in order to save Mary and the servant girl.
