The setting is Baxter, a rust-belt city, and it has a lot of crime and crooked cops. Detective Delia Mariola vows to try and clean it up as much as she can. She gets called to the scene of a murder, one of her own, Sergeant Rowan Krauss, has been shot to death, and it looks like it was a pro or someone he knew that did it. She’s determined to find the killer with very little to go on. In a dual story, Tom Carney is an undercover cop, hired by Delia, to help weed out bad cops and corruption in the city. Each chapter is told by one of the characters, and we follow them along on their jobs as they gather evidence, make arrests, deal with more dead bodies, and bring down the bad guys. This is the fifth novel in the series, and it’s a good one. It’s my first time reading one of these novels, and I like the character of Delia, a strong female who is good at her job. The plot is well-written, and you want to keep reading along. I can’t wait for the next one.
