Book Review: ‘Bronte’s Mistress: A Novel’ By Finola Austin

In Yorkshire in 1843 and Lydia Robinson has lost her daughter and her mother in the last year. Her marriage to her husband Edmund seems to be in name only. They haven’t had sex in along time. When she arrives home she finds Branwell Bronte (who has a drinking problem), the brother of the famous Bronte sisters, is tutoring her son. She also notices he is a good looking man and is young, only 25 years old.

One night after a fight with her husband she goes to visit Branwell and they bond a bit. She visits more and more until it turns into a full affair. She isn’t sure about keeping the affair going especially after something tragic happens. And discretion might not be so great, as whispers surface and even get back to his famous sisters. Will Lydia be able to end this before it’s too late?

This is the debut novel from author Finola Austin and it’s Great! If you’re a fan of the Bronte sisters and this kind of fiction, this book is most definitely for you.

You can pick up Bronte’s Mistress in stores from Atria Books on Tuesday, August 4th.
