Madeline Brimley moves back home, to Enigma, Georgia, when her Aunt Rose dies and leaves her the house she owned, which was also her business, a bookstore called the Old Juniper Bookshop. She was living in Atlanta, trying to be an actress and it wasn’t working out well for her. On her first night back, she finds the gazebo on fire and it’s determined it was arson. Then she gets mysterious calls from a man telling her to leave. Then another fire takes place and a young college student named Tandy, who worked at the bookshop and was staying over with Madeline, is stabbed to death. She wants to sell the house, but can’t for at least six months. She teams up with her aunt’s friend, Dr. Philomena and the local Priest, a woman named Gloria and together they’re on the case to find out who the killer, arsonist and phone caller are. Along the way secrets are revealed, and Madeline soon finds her life in danger. A fun mystery set in a small-town, with interesting, somewhat quirky characters and a fun cat. This is the debut novel from author Nelson of this new series and it’s off to a good start.
