Book Review: ‘Blood Metal Bone’ By Lindsey Cummings

Review by Lauryn Angel

Blood Metal Bone is the latest novel from Lindsey Cummings, and it’s a fun mix of fantasy, science fiction, and even westerns. It’s the story of Sonara, the bastard daughter of a Dorhsaran queen, who is put to death for treason, but comes back to life. Sonara is a Shadowblood – a unique group of individuals who resurrect to an outcast existance, gifted with unusual powers. Sonara becomes an outlaw known as “The Devil,” but the Devil may have met her match when an alien ship lands on her planet with nefarious plans.

The novel is largely character-driven, as Sonara has to figure out who to trust as her worldview gets upended. She is also trying to solve the mystery of her brother’s disappearance ten years earlier. Along the way she meets a variety of characters who challenge her way of thinking about her powers, her planet, and even her people. That being said, there’s still plenty of action here, and the world Cunningham has created is intriguing – although this novel doesn’t reveal much. I’d like to read about the other parts of the planet that Sonara and her friends didn’t make it to.

The book is marketed for Young Adults, and it’s comparable to the work of Leigh Bardugo and Sarah J. Maas – if you’re looking for a good summer read, this is definitely a book to pick up and take to the beach, the pool, or even a hammock!
