Book Review: ‘Belly Up’ Is A Heartwarming Young Adult Novel About One Young Girl And Her Pregnancy

Sara lives with her mother and is seventeen years old. She’s basically a good girl and doesn’t get into trouble, has good grades and looking forward to going to school. Then the party. It changed her life. She drank to much. Playing quarters was a mistake. Seeing her ex and his new skanky girlfriend didn’t help. Seeing a hot guy like Jack who was paying her attention didn’t help. Getting wasted and not using a condom didn’t help. And now she is pregnant.

She and her mom are moving in with their overbearing Grandmother. She has to change schools. And now she has to tell her mother she is having a baby. And now she has to decide will she keep it? How will people react? What’s it like to be pregnant? All questions someone young has to deal with.

The book explores all that and more. With the support of her family, her best friend Devi and a guy she meets at school named Leon, she just may get through it.

An awesome story that looks at things from all angles. It is not preachy and doesn’t take any type of stand one way or the other. Just the story of a brave young girl who makes a drunken mistake and is now taking responsibility for it. I have really become a fan of the Young Adult genre lately (and I am so out of the demographic for it).
