The mayor of Paterson, New Jersey, who is a candidate for Governor, was shot to death, along with one of his donors. Jon Lowery, a vet, is the prime suspect and has taken off. Three weeks later, his sister appeals to Andy Carpenter to help. Andy ends up taking him on as a client, once again coming out of his retirement. He gets the gang together, and they start their investigation. They soon find that there is a lot of corruption among the principal players and potential suspects. Andy is also getting threats and has to up his security; Marcus can only do so much. We follow along with the trial, and once the case is over, Andy gets a shock and ends up doing something shocking himself. This is the 34th novel in the series and another good one. Andy, his wife Laurie, and the quirky supporting characters make for one of the best sets of characters in any book series. Long-ime fans of the series will enjoy this one.
