On the final day of WWI, November 18th, 1918, two babies were born on the estate of the Earl of Brancaster; a little girl, Evelina, to the Earl, and his wife, who died in childbirth, as did the twin brother. A little boy was born to the family’s shepherd, and was named Adam. We follow them along in their lives from that day forward. Evelina is taught by a governess, and soon Adam is her schoolmate, and they don’t get along well at first. Over the years, as they grow, they fall in love, and we witness it as the days and months go on. We follow Eve, as she likes to be called now, at the Berlin Olympics, the rise of Hitler, the two away at college, but always there for each other when home. When Adam proposes, Eve says yes, and a wedding is planned, but war stops that from happening, as Adam is sent off to fight. As their story wraps up, there’s a betrayal, a shocking murder, a valiant sacrifice, and a wrap-up to the story of Adam & Eve. This is the final novel of author Jeffrey Archer (who wrote the WIlliam Warwick series one of my favorites), who has been writing books for decades, and what a book it is. This is a masterpiece of a novel, and is one of the best love stories of the year and one of the best books of the year (beware, you will need tissues by the time you finish).
