The 18th novel in the series is great. Two people from Gamache and Jean-Guy’s past come back to Three Pines, and danger bring danger with them. Years ago Fiona and Sam’s mother was found murdered and Inspector Gamache and a young Jean are working the case. It’s the first time the two meet, and it doesn’t start off good. They soon uncover what really happened, and Fiona went to jail for murder, and now years later it comes back in full force. Gamache stayed in contact with Fiona, and treated her like a daughter, and now she’s staying with him at the moment. Her brother Sam comes to town as well, he has a chip on his shoulder, and several murders take place. And when a secret room, a painting, and a mysterious letter arrive, they’re all clues that Gamache must figure out before it’s too late for him, and his family. The backstory in the novel is great for long-time fans of the novels, who will love this book. The story is thrilling, and leads to a climactic showdown, as only Louise Penny can write.
