Author Jason Pinter debuted his new series last year with Hide Away featuring a great character in Rachel Marin. Now he’s back with the second novel in his series and it’s as good or better than the first one. This time around we learn a lot more about Rachel’s past and she needs to deal with that for the sake of her kids and her own life moving forward.
Things with Rachel seem to be going good. It’s been six months with her new boyfriend Detective John Serrano and he gets along good with her kids, teenager Eric (who still has issues from the past) and daughter Megan, who’s writing a book series. When John is called away to a fire where a dead body is found, it connects Rachel to the investigation. She had the night before received an e-mail from teacher Matthew Linklater saying he needs to talk to her about something he has uncovered at school. It turns out his body was found at the fire.
Something is going on in town with a rich man and a high school senior and soon their sites are set on Eric. And then Rachel gets a blast from the past when a mysterious woman shows up in town and at her door. This woman warns Rachel to back off from the investigation of the murder and what the e-mail might mean. She threatens to expose Rachel’s past.
As Rachel and the police investigate they follow a trail of money, intimadation, murder and violence. Rache is determined to save her son and it puts her own life in jeopardy. As they learn the shocking secrets of what’s going on in town it may be too late for quite a few people caught up in what’s been going on. And Rachel must finally put the past to rest.
A solid second novel and here’s to more adventures with Rachel. You can pick up A Stranger At The Door in stores on Tuesday, January 12th.
