Book Review: ‘A Royal Affair’ Is A Great Follow-Up To The Right Sort Of Man By Allison Montclair

The Right Sort Of Man came out in 2019 and I loved it. It’s written by author Allison Montclair (a fake name for the author who is well know for writing historical fiction). Her follow-up novel A Royal Affair is just as good or even better than the first novel. There’s no sophomore slump here. A well-written story with two strong, smart female characters drive the story. And a great supporting character in Sally (a tall hunk of a man). And there’s plenty of LOL moments as well.

The year is 1946 and business for Iris Sparks and Gwendolyn Bainbridge is going well at The Right Sort Marriage Bureau. It’s a first of its kind dating service for men and women. They are even thinking of expanding to a bigger office next door to where they are (but need more money to do that and there’s a funny running joke about one of the desks named Cecil). As they await their next client, it turns out to be a surprise. Lady Matheson, a cousin of Gwen’s arrives, she works for the Queen.

It turns out she needs the help of Iris and Gwen and involves the royal family and the princess Elizabeth, next in line for the throne. It needs to be done on the down low so as to not involve the Crown in anyway. They’re being asked because of how they solved a murder in the first book. Seems someone is trying to blackmail the crown over alleged information about the Greek Prince Phillip, who is expected to ask Elizabeth to marry him.

Now Iris and Gwen have to set out to vet the prince, figure out who is blackmailing and stop this before it gets to be too late. They have to call in favors from everyone they know. But someone is also on to them and soon a dead body shows up, a man with a gun and a very smart plan by Iris and Gwen to expose everything before it’s too late.

I am not sure who Allison is but I am hoping there will be a lot more stories involving Sparks & Bainbridge. You can pick up A Royal Affair in stores now.
