The year is 1921 and Dr. Gilbert Lawless is back to work, after having been shot, at the Philly morgue where he is a coroner. He and his partner, Marco, are called to assist in the death of Homer O’Hara, with Det. Finnegan Pyle. The man is believed to have been poisoned. When he stops for ice cream, another man dies there and again it’s by poisoning. Edie Shippen, a rich lady of society and potential love interest for Gilbert, has started he own PI business, along with Gilbert’s sister Lizzie. Her first client is Lily O’Hara, who is accused of murdering her husband. Edie’s friend Ava Sylvester, an actress, starring in a new movie with her new husband, Duncan Carroll, who dies while playing Romeo and drinking the poison, which was real poison on set. Edie takes on Ava as a client as well, she is being looked at for killing Duncan. The race is on to find the killer, who may be right in front of them. This is the second novel in this series, I didn’t read the first one, and I loved it. The setting in 1921, the gangsters, the mob, the bootlegging and the main characters are a lot of fun to read. I can only hope that in future books GIlbert and Edie get together, they have a lot of chemistry. This is one not to be missed.
