I really like rom-coms when they’re really well-written. And author Preslaysa Williams has written a really good one. This is a strong story with characters you root for and a great setting in Charleston, South Carolina. Maya Jackson is a wedding dress designer for one of the top houses in New York City. She’s up for head designer when her father calls and tells her he broke his hip. She takes vacation time and time off to go take care of him. While there she meets Derek, who owns a local bridal shop that’s in financial trouble. She offers suggestions and soon he hires her to work there and her unique african-american designs are a hit with the locals. It gets her and the shop so big-time coverage and the shop is soon out of trouble. Maya and Derek become close but they have the obstacle of his 12 year-old daughter Jamila, who lost her mother (Derek’s wife) and grandmother in a mass shooting a year ago. And Maya has a secret as well. They overcome these obstacles but soon Maya is offered the job as head designer in New York. Will she take it and sell out or want to be with Derek and Jamila?
