Book Review: ‘A Little Ray Of Sunshine: A Novel’ By Kristan Higgins

Harlow lives on the Cape, is 35 years old, single, and part-owner of a successful book store. She lives about it with her dog Ollie, and looks after her Grandfather, who’s up there in age, and has memories issues. The last thing she was expecting was to see him in her store, the son she gave up for adoption almost 18 years ago. Matthew and his father have appeared in the store, much to Harlow’s shock, and that of Matthew’s family. His family will be spending the summer on the Cape, and he wants to get to know her. It comes as a shock to Harlow’s family as well, she never told anyone, except her college roommate, and best friend Rosie, who has come to be by her side. As the days and weeks go on, there are a lot of hurt feelings, getting to know each other, love, anger, and at its core family. There’s also a potential new love for Harlow, Granddad, and a cousin who has secrets of her own. This is an intense character driven story, at it’s core about family, secrets, and second chances. Only Kristan Higgins can write these type of novels.
