Berkley, California is the setting for this intense, great debut novel. A wildfire is spreading, and we meet and follow a diverse group of characters, leading up to the evacuation and the aftermath. Abigail is married to Taylor for a long time now, and they have a son, Xavier, who is applying to colleges, and likes the new girl at school Mar. Sunny, is out of prison, working construction, and living in a van with his wife Willow, who has a horrifying thing that happened to her years ago. The story alternates between characters and situations, and is a novel you don’t want to put down, as we follow along with these characters.
