Ian Rutledge is excited about his promotion to chief inspector, but he isn’t able to celebrate yet, as he is assigned to look into a murder. In 1921, he was ordered to go to Northumberland to look into the death of a local man, Oswin Dunn, whose body was washed ashore. This is to be investigated quickly and quietly, if possible, to avoid any issues with the Church of England. Rutledge soon learns the man was murdered with a blow to the head. As he investigates, it leads him to small towns and people who don’t want to talk or like strangers in their areas. He soon overhears a conversation that helps him figure out what happened to the man, and that of another body found dead. Along the way, he has to deal with Hamish, the voice in his head, who has haunted him since the war. This is another great novel featuring two of my favorite characters in Ian and Hamish. The story is fast-paced and well-written. Fans of the series will enjoy this one.
