The setting is Stenland, a small European city, that has a history to it. All female citizens live under a potential curse, called the Skeld, where three lines appear on their forehead, and if anyone looks at them they turn to stone. Each morning they always have to look in the mirror, they never know when it will appear. Then they go into hiding for three months until it goes away. Kitty, Tess and Linnea grew up as best friends and always worried that it could hit them at any time. Tess’s mother forgot to look one morning and killed the parents of Soren, who would later be the boyfriend of Tess, until things started going bad between them, they couldn’t figure out how to make things work over the years. Tess has always dreamed of leaving this place and finally did. When she comes back for a wedding, the three women get the Skeld, a tragedy occurs and they all have to re-think their lives. This is a well-written character-driven novel, with supernatural elements, love stories and at its core about family. This is a great debut novel from author Robson.
