When talking about casino movies, it makes sense to start with probably the most famous of them all. ‘Casino’ (1995) is over 25 years old but still holds up as one of the classic films of the 1990s. You don’t have to be a casino nut to love the film as it has the quality to appeal to movie fans across the board. In fact, some rate it among the best films of all time. And when you look at the names involved, it’s no surprise. The flick is directed by legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese and stars the likes of Robert De Niro, Sharon Stone and Joe Pesci.
Set against the backdrop of 1970s and 1980s Las Vegas, Casino is a tale of money, corruption, greed and murder. It focuses on a power struggle between a casino executive and a mob worker. It’s an engrossing tale that glimpses at the darker side of Las Vegas during a bygone era. It also serves as a reminder of a world without the internet and the extensive choice of online casino operators that we take for granted today. Next up, is a movie that was distributed by Netflix in 2017 and brings a bit of comedy to the casino genre. ‘Win It All’ was co-written and directed by Joe Swanberg and stars Jake Johnson, who co-wrote the screenplay. The plot revolves around a mysterious duffel bag full of money which is entrusted into the care of the main character Eddie by a local tough guy while he is in prison. However, Eddie fails to keep his end of the bargain begins gambling the cash leading to a spiral of events culminating in a surprise ending.
Croupier
Our third choice, ‘Croupier’ (1998), takes on the casino theme from a completely different angle. This time we see the casino through the eyes of the dealer, played by the former James Bond candidate and ‘The Informer’ (2019) star Clive Owen. The protagonist is actually a struggling writer who accepts a job as a croupier and realizes that his experiences in the role would provide great material for a novel. The film has a neo-noir film and also steps into heist movie territory, which is not a bad thing. Throughout it all, Owen gives a star turn as a man, with disdain for others. who is also struggling to come to terms with the direction his own life is taking.
