London, in the 1920s, in an alternate time, magic still excists but most has been banned. The powerful families that still have it operate illegal bars and clubs, with secret back rooms. Vesper Holloway, whose family is magical and rich, runs the family business, where you can buy a potion for a little added fun to your night. Maxwell Ashbridge, a former friend of Vesper’s brother, and who once saw Vesper half-naked, works for a government agency that wants to shut down these clubs. He shows up at her club one night, and she knows who he is, and she confronts him about it. Then, one customer who bought a potion to float goes all the way to the ceiling, some sort of accident. There are reports of these potions going haywire among the clubs. Vesper and Max team up to find out just what is going on. They attend different clubs where crazier things with potions are happening. Along the way, they end up falling for each other, and uncover a shocking plot, and just who is behind what is happening. Following these two characters on their journey is refreshing and fun. One of the best magical stories of the year.
