The small town of North Falls is the setting for this new series from author Karin Slaughter (Will Trent series). Cheyenne Baker and Madison Dalrymple, both 15, are planning on running away during the annual 4th of July fireworks. Only Cheyenne never shows up, and when Madison sees her in a car being kidnapped, she is also taken. Emmay Clifton is investigating the case along with the whole police department. The FBI also becomes involved, and they soon learn shocking things about the teens and their plans. The prime suspect appears to be Adam Huntsinger when the girls’ bodies are found. Twelve years later, Adam is released when new evidence shows he committed a different crime that night. When another girl goes missing, Emmy is on a mission to find her and figure out who the killer was back then and now. It leads to a shocking reveal. A solid start to this new series. It is a bit long winded at times, but the last third of the novel makes up for it. Fans of Slaughter’s novels will enjoy this one.
