The Second World War is over, and the Channel Islands are finally free from the Germans. Life has been forever changed and for Jean Paris, who is 19, and her mother, the fate of their father is finally revealed. He was taken by the Germans during the war. A man shows up claiming he was with her father and that he is dead and now Jean finds out that someone ratted him out about having a radio and suspects it was Hazel, who lived above the shop her father owned. She denies it, and soon Jean learns shocking truths about her father, and her family and that maybe Hazel isn’t guilty after all, all the while keeping a shocking secret of her own that could get her in big trouble. This is a well-written, character-driven novel, about two women and their secrets, who end up forming a friendship against all odds. Readers become emotionally invested in the story. A good 4th of July novel.
