Nerf-herder turned Force Builder Sig Greebling is back for an all-new adventure, just one year after he and his brother Dev rearranged the galaxy. “Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past,” a new four-part mini series, will be available to stream in its entirety on Disney+ starting September 19th

Darth Solitus, an old threat, has emerged from the past seeking to destroy the new galaxy Sig Created. It will take the combined efforts of Sig, Jedi Bob, Yesi, Servo, some new friends, and unexpected allies to combine the powers of Force Building and Sith Breaking to stop Solitus. The returning voice cast includes Gaten Matarazzo as Sig, Tony Revolori as Dev, Bobby Moynihan as Jedi Bob, Marsai Martin as Yesi, and Michael Cusack as Servo. They are joined by new series regulars Dan Stevens as Solitus, Ashley Eckstein as Ahsoka Tano, and Ben Schwartz as Jaxxon. Plus, there are plenty of cameos like Mark Hamill, Ahmed Best, Anthony Daniels, and Kelly Marie Tran.

“Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past” is a character-driven sequel to the first season, but in part an emotional sequel to “The Lego Movie.” While Solitus doesn’t wield the Kragle like President Business, he is also partially driven by his hatred of disorder and the Jedi’s insistence on building anything they want, not just what the pieces were designed for. His name, Solitus, gives away his other driving factor. Because he spent an untold number of years alone in the Force Hold, this universe’s version of the Phantom Zone or The Void from “Loki.” Now he seeks to send everyone to the hold and correct the galaxy by reducing it to nothingness.

On the brothers’ side of things, we delve into more classic Star Wars universe storytelling. Even though we know only Sith are supposed to deal in absolutes, Jedi Bob believes that once someone falls to darkness, they cannot be redeemed. Lucky for Dev, Sig refuses to believe that his loving brother is not still a part of his new Darth persona. Sig’s mission to save Dev and their forced cooperation when facing Solitus is the perfect setting for more exploration of the morally gray areas of the force, where light and dark sides coexist.

Visually, the series continues the excellent tradition of the franchise with vibrant colors and that near stop-motion feel. The cast is great, especially if the recording was done separately, because there is good chemistry between them that could otherwise come from their increased comfort in a second season. Plot-wise, the story is thin. They have a broad framework, but the series too often leans on cameos and gags to be top-tier all-ages content. But it is perfect for their young target audience and good enough for their parents or the completionists who need to see all things Star Wars. While not a masterpiece, “Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past” is a well-made bit of fun and earns a 4 out of 5.
